Mark's Self Portate Portrait

Biography

I have been taking photographs for almost my entire life. My grandmother was an early photographer and placed a Kodak box camera in my hands soon after she took away my baby bottle. Over the course of my life so far, I have photographed weddings, sports events, nature, cats, racing, aviation, travels and Wisconsin subjects.  I have used both film and digital; still and video; color and black & white.

I was born in Monticello, Wisconsin and spent my first 10 years on a farm worked by my parents and grandparents.  My parents then moved off the farm and into the restaurant business. I grew up working in every position in the restaurant, from dishwasher to cook. In high school I was one of those camera club nerds. By then I had moved from the old Kodak box camera to using my dad’s 35mm film camera. After I graduated from high school, I attended some college at the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. There I took photography courses in both the art and journalism departments.  But my main interest was becoming an airline pilot. By then I was a licensed pilot and working my way up. That is until the end of the Vietnam War. Too many former military jet pilots were on the market. I turned to computers to make a living, but still kept my hand in photography.

Both the farm and restaurant have taught me the value of hard work. Photography takes hard work, just like a farm or restaurant to get good results.

I live with my wife, Ann, our cats, Princess & Newbie and several Koi in rural Wisconsin.

Artist Statement

I firmly believe in what Bill Brandt, British photographer and photojournalist said; “Photography is not a sport. It has no rules. Everything must be dared and tried!” I am always experimenting with different techniques to give the viewer of my photographs pleasure in seeing something they can connect with. They may see something familiar in a different way. They may see something that draws them into my world of photography. They may see something that brings back memories. Or they may just see the beauty that my subject offers to them. In any case, I want the viewer of my work to connect in some way.

Most of my work has a connection with nature in some way. Since I am a lifelong resident of Wisconsin, many of my subjects are Wisconsin landscapes, buildings, or animals. The beauty of nature offers so many possibilities from the simple crocus popping up in the first days of spring to summer landscapes full of vivid color. I also enjoy capturing the reflections from any of Wisconsin’s bodies of water or man-made objects. I do not limit myself to just nature subjects, I also photograph aviation, automobiles, trains, lighthouses and other man-made subjects.

I work primarily in digital. I take each photograph and tweak it in my Macintosh computer to achieve the look I saw when I took the photograph. Some photographs require very little tweaking and some more to achieve the final look I desire.
